OHIO'S BEST GOLF COURSES

By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut

Ohio's best golf courses start with Muirfield Village Golf Club, in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, the Jack Nicklaus gem designed to resemble Augusta that is ranked the 17th best course in America by Golf Digest. The heavily wooded course, which plays 7,343 yards from the back tees, sports downhill shots off elevated tees with lakes and streams coming into play on 11 holes with cross winds that can play havoc with your shots.

The Buckeye state offers a number of other challenging courses for golfers of all levels. One of Ohio's best golf courses is the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, which was ranked number 1 in Ohio by Golfweek Magazine. The 7,243 yard par 72 course, nestled among the rolling hills of east central Ohio, features elevation changes of over 100 feet with water in play on six greens. You'll experience downhill, uphill narrow landing areas, split fairways, water and trees. Among the most dramatic holes in the par 5 4th, 565 yards from the back tees with a 150 yard elevation drop from tee to green.

Stonewater Golf Club in Highland Heights is one of Ohio's best golf courses. The back nine was cut out of the natural woods and the ponds, creeks and tee boxes are all rock lined, which is the course's signature. Wetlands, ponds and creeks come into play on sixteen holes.

The greens are large, fast and undulating. A signature hole is the par 3 3rd, 201 yards that carries water throughout, with sand on the left side. The most difficult hole on the back nine is the 13th, a 626-yard par 5, which features two wetland areas that push out from the rough into the playing area.

Avalon Lakes Golf Club in Warren is another one of Ohio's best golf courses. The Pete Dye course was recently redesigned with water now coming into play on 12 holes. The 7,001 yard course features fairways that vary in width with large undulating greens. Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, north of Cincinnati and south of Dayton, is one of Ohio's best golf courses that features three nines, with water hazards on 14 holes, including a 125 acre lake. Among the signature holes are the par 3 8th, with a downhill shot to a green guarded by high brush; and the par 4 9th, a dogleg right along the lakeside that plays into prevailing wind.
