ILLINOIS BEST GOLF COURSES, FROM CHICAGO TO GALENA
By Ken Liebeskind
Illinois best golf courses start with Medinah Country Club, which hosted the U.S. Open three times and the PGA Championship twice. There are three courses at the club, including the famed number 3, which at 7,508 yards was at one time the longest course to host a major championship. Its rough is made more difficult by a plethora of trees and Lake Kadijah comes into play on several holes, with four requiring a crossing of a finger of the lake.
The Butler National Golf Club in Oakbrook is another one of Illinois best golf courses. Designed by George Fazio, the flat tree lined course demands long straight drives with tricky undulated greens. The signature holes are the par 5 7th, a dog leg right with the river lapping the fairway and the par 3 8th with the river behind the green.
There are 742 golf courses in Illinois, giving you the chance to play a round at a variety of courses around the state, from the Chicago area to the Southern tip. Illinois best golf courses in Chicago include the Harborside International Golf Center, which is set on land near Lake Calumet and offers striking views of the Chicago skyline. The Cantigny Golf Course in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton offers 27 holes, including the Lakeside nine that boasts the signature hole, the watery par 4 9th with an enormous bunker shaped like Dick Tracy.
